Note:
Your IT or Security team may have already installed Kolide automatically for you. You can skip to registration if this is the case.

macOS

Install

  1. Open the kolide-launcher.pkg file to begin the installation process.

  2. When the installation wizard opens, click Continue.

  3. Click Install.

  4. If you are prompted for Touch ID or administrative permissions, enter them and click Install Software.

  5. Once the installation is complete, click Close.

Note: Unless it is explicitly hidden by your organization, the Kolide Menu Bar application will appear two to three minutes after the Kolide installation is completed.

Configure

Allowing Notifications

Kolide is capable of displaying useful notifications when the status of your device changes, or when registration is successful. Shortly after the Menu Bar app activates, it will ask for the appropriate permissions to display banner-style notifications.

Shortly after the Kolide Menu Bar application appears, you will see a prompt like the one above. Click it and follow the instructions to enable notifications about your device’s status.

If you miss this notification, you can manually enable the permissions by following these instructions.

  1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then select System Settings from the pull-down menu.

  2. In the left menu pane of the System Settings window, select the menu item labeled Notifications.

  3. In the right pane, look for the section called Application Notifications and click on the Kolide entry.

  4. Enable the toggle switch next to Allow notifications and ensure all the other settings match the screenshot below.

Granting Full Disk Access

Macs utilize a granular permissions system to limit applications’ access to important system or user files.

While Kolide can function without this additional access, some of Kolide’s Checks that look for plain-text credentials in Downloads, Documents, and Desktop folders will not function. In addition, without these permissions, Kolide will be unable to determine if other apps have inappropriate permissions on the device.

Privacy:
Kolide takes having full disk access very seriously and will never transmit the content of your personal files to our service.

To enable Full Disk Access, follow these instructions:

  1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then select System Settings from the pull-down menu.

  2. In the left menu pane of the System Settings window, select the menu item labeled Privacy & Security.

  3. In the right pane, select Full Disk Access.

  4. Find the line item for Kolide and click the toggle to enable full disk access. Once toggled, you may need to provide a password or a biometric confirmation to confirm the change.

What if Kolide isn’t listed?
If you do not see “Kolide” in the list of available applications, try the following steps:

  1. Click the + button to add a new permitted application. This will open a new Finder window.

  2. On your keyboard, press the Command + Shift + G keys simultaneously to open the Go to Folder window.

  3. In the Go to Folder window, type /usr/local/kolide-k2/Kolide.app and press Enter.

  4. This will show you the location of the Kolide agent (named “Kolide”). Click Open.

  5. You should now find Kolide present on the application list, with the toggle set to the enabled position. Once you’ve confirmed this, you can close the window.

Windows

Install

ARM Processors Not Supported:
Kolide’s Windows support is limited to PCs with an Intel/AMD CPU and does not currently support ARM processors. If you’d like to track our development progress, you can refer to this GitHub issue.

  1. Double-click the kolide-launcher.msi file to begin the installation wizard.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

  3. If prompted, reboot the computer.

Note: Unless it is explicitly hidden by your organization, the Kolide Menu Bar application will appear two to three minutes after the Kolide installation is completed.

Ubuntu (.deb)

Install

ARM Processors Not Supported:
Kolide’s RPM Linux support is limited to PCs with an Intel/AMD CPU and does not currently support ARM processors. If you’d like to track our development progress, you can refer to this GitHub issue.

  1. If using a window manager like GNOME, simply double-click the kolide-launcher.deb file and follow the on-screen instructions.

  2. Alternatively, you can install the package from a terminal with sudo dpkg -i kolide-launcher.deb

Note: Unless it is explicitly hidden by your organization, the Kolide Menu Bar application will appear two to three minutes after the Kolide installation is completed.

Centos (.rpm)

Install

  1. If using a window manager like GNOME, simply double-click the kolide-launcher.rpm file and follow the on-screen instructions.

  2. Alternatively, you can install the package from a terminal with sudo rpm -i kolide-launcher.rpm.

iOS/Android

Install

Follow the instructions to download and install the Kolide app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store

Apps are automatically installed when downloaded from the official platform store.
